In my practice, I regularly see patients dealing with low back pain, often accompanied by sciatica. During the initial assessment, one of my primary goals is to determine whether chiropractic care is a suitable treatment option. By conducting a thorough evaluation, we can identify whether the symptoms are linked to a mechanical or structural issue that could benefit from manual treatment. In some cases, advanced imaging, such as a CT scan or MRI, may be necessary.

In cases of a true herniated or bulging disc pressing on a nerve root, there are specific symptoms that can help pinpoint the affected nerve and the level of the disc involved. If an MRI is needed, it’s important to perform a thorough physical exam beforehand. This is because MRIs sometimes reveal bulging discs that don’t match the patient’s clinical symptoms.

Chiropractic care can be a highly effective approach for treating disc and nerve root issues, potentially avoiding the need for surgery. The first step is a combination of manual therapy and carefully selected rehabilitation exercises, all based on a detailed physical assessment. By understanding which movements relieve or worsen the pain, we can tailor a treatment plan that includes exercises to support recovery, while avoiding activities that could aggravate the condition.

A new treatment at Momentum Health that has shown to be very effective for stubborn low back and sciatic cases is spinal decompression.  This treatment helps to create actual joint space in the lumbar spine and relieve the nerve irritation associated with sciatic symptoms.  It is also a comfortable and relaxing intervention.  For more information on spinal decompression Spinal Decompression
